The New Zealand Storm-petrel had been considered extinct for over 100 years when it was re-discovered in the Hauraki Gulf in 2003. It has subsequently been regularly observed in small numbers during the summer months around the vicinity of Little Barrier Island.
The full story of the re-discovery of this species can be found on the Pterodroma Pelagics website.
